Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS)
Electronic article surveillance (EAS) or commonly called as antitheft systems provide the retailer with a mechanism to monitor and deter retail theft. EAS system provides a visual deterrent to potential shoplifters with the visible antennas and a sense of protection to the retailer. EAS system consists of three main components: Detection System, Tags/Labels and Detachers/Deactivators.
Detection Systems:
The Pedestal Antennas installed at the retail exit’s to monitor them and alarm whenever merchandise leaves the store without being purchased. The Antennas can be visible antennas or concealed ones depending on the aesthetic requirements of the retailer. The antennas can provide additional functionalities with add-ons for People Counting, Advertisement panels, jammer and metal foil detection. The EAS antennas primarily work in two different technologies i.e AM & RF.
Tags/Labels:
Merchandise are attached with reusable Hard tags or the one time Label tags. These are usually selected from the product offering based on the packaging and nature of the product to be protected. This tag will make the system alarm if it leaves the store without being removed or deactivated.
Detachers/Deactivators:
Detaching or Deactivation is a process where the Tags or labels are taken off or made inactive at the point of sale when the customer completes the purchase process from the retailer.
Functionality
The Detection Antennas installed at the Retailers Exit’s creates a surveillance zone between them. The transmitter relays a pulsed radio frequency signal which energizes the tag in the surveillance zone. An active tag on the merchandise leaving the store responds to the signal from the antenna resulting in the antenna to alarm. The store personnel will take necessary steps to protect the merchandise when the alarm is raised.
